Web Site Tracking Terms
Web site traffic analytics mean nothing if you don't clearly understand the terms used to describe each variable. We are more than happy to help our clients identify the most pertinent data to their organization but first we need to define the terms.
The following terms are common in web site tracking tools and are prevalent in the Webalizer and NetTracker tools used by First Scribe.
- Hits: The total number of requests for data made during
the time period (Month, Day, Hour, etc.).
- Files: The total number of requests that resulted in a file being
sent to the browser. Not all hits will send data, repeat visitors
may have files cached locally.
- Sites: The number of unique IP addresses that requested data.
This number may loosely be used to show number of visitors but it is limited
in its usefulness. Repeat visitors may return to your site from a different
IP address.
- Visits: Visits are counted when another computer makes a request
for a page for the first time within a certain time period.
- Pages: The number of "real" web site pages that are requested
- as opposed to the small items that may make up a page (links,
images, animations).
- KByte (KB) is 1024 bytes (1 Kilobyte). This number is used to
show the amount of data transmitted by the server.
