Internet Directory Recommendations
Business Internet Directory services are an excellent way to increase exposure to your website. Their benefit is two fold:
- They provide direct traffic (their clients click on your link within the directory).
- They provide indirect increases through the big engines.
While we don't like to give away all of our secrets to Internet Marketing, we like to give folks an idea of the directories we most often use. Next to each directory you will find a short description as to why we choose that service.
- DMOZ - DMOZ
is the original must-have Internet Directory. These days their
editors are over-worked and it is exceptionally difficult to
get a listing. If you get in, you will notice an effect on your
traffic.
- Yahoo Directory -
These days if you want to rank highly in Yahoo you must be in
their directory. It's the most expensive of the common directories
at $299 per year but it's difficult to do without.
- Various small directories -
These little directories are the
bread and butter of certain link-building campaigns.
- Link With Us - Web Directory - A small directory with a solid page rank of 5.
- Network-Room.com - PR5 within a good neighborhood.
- Ldmstudio Directory - A small link directory with helpful SEO tools.
- Photography -
New Zealand Travel and Photography.
- Niche Directories - Link building often benefits more from relevence
of contextual links than it does on PageRank of a linking site.
A good text link from a small directory, specific to your
niche, can be very valuable.
- Minnesota Resorts - The Otter Tail Country Tourism Association provides a small directory of area resorts.
- North American Hunting Guides - A small directory specific to hunting and fishing guides.
- Ldmstudio Directory - A small directory for link building.
- goongee Directory - Web
Directory with good business categories.
- Marketing Tool - This is a perfect example of the type of directory we use to promote our own services.
Remember, link building is very important to your ranking in the big search engines - link where you can but do not gamble on big risks.
Find good quality, relevant links and stay out of "bad neighborhoods" as best you can. A free link from a directory specializing in spamming and/or adult content is a bad neighborhood and it will only harm you; sometimes permanently.
If you can answer yes to these questions, it's probably worth a small fee:
- Is the site free of porn and gambling?
- Do they have a Google PageRank and appear in Google search by their keywords?
- When you look around the site, is this a place you want your name to appear?
- Does your listing appear on a page with similar content to your own?
