The iPhone™ completely changed the web design field in 2007. Suddenly millions of mobile browsers flooded the market before anyone could update their websites to a mobile friendly version. Sure, the small Safari™ browser was able to view any website but the lack of Flash support and large images deterred a lot of visitors from Flash-heavy sites.

We are now a few years down the road and now all sites we build are evaluated on the Mobile platforms of the iPhone, Android™, and iPad™ platforms. While a Blackberry™ can surf the Internet, their browser lacks the rich media experience and the traffic numbers lag far behind the others.

Each platform brings its own special requirements for mobile website design:

iPhone - The iPhone is a solid platform with a large number of users. The Flash support and browser size are the biggest obstacles.
iPad - The iPad has a huge display but the Flash support and slower-mobile download speeds can still create challenges.
Android - The Android operating system is a Linux OS and plays well with websites but Flash support and browser size are at issue for phones without the Android 2.2 Frodo release.
