I recently read a story about why every social media manager should be under 25 and had to take a look at myself. As someone who falls into the article’s demographic I feel like I need to share my thoughts on why I don’t think every person under 25 should be managing social media accounts, especially if they’re fresh out of college.
I was 3 months removed from college before I started at First Scribe. I thought I knew something about social media because I had taken a whole semester long class plus been using the social media accounts for a few years.
FYI – it’s no big deal if you can run a social media account; this isn’t what employers are looking for. They want you to able to report why they’re losing or gaining followers, what types of posts attract more engagement or which social media outlet provides the best ROI for their company.
Now, hindsight is always 20/20 in these kinds of situations so I’m sure Cathryn regrets what she said and I regret thinking I knew even the tiniest bit about being a social media manager.
So, recent graduates or about to graduate students, the real world is a lot different than you think. Go into a job with an open mind and a determination to learn as much as you can and as quickly as possible. Doing so will make your work experience a lot more enjoyable.
