Bing Predicts Looks Good in NFL Week 7; Week 8 Preview
Bing Predicts didn't have any surprise picks for NFL Week 7, and it wasn't much of a surprise how Bing's predictions fared. In a week that seemed relatively calm, the search engine finished with a 10-4 record. Bing is now 67-38 (63.8%) on the season, just behind where the prediction engine was last year at this time (69-37).
Week 7 Recap
For the most part, Week 7 played out how everyone expected. Sure, it was a bit surprising that the Jaguars beat the Bills, but it wasn't exactly a big-time matchup. The Colts losing to the Saints might seem like a shocker, but only if you haven't been paying attention to how inconsistent the Colts have been so far this season. Bing also missed the outcomes of the Steelers-Chiefs and the Chargers-Raiders games, neither of which would be considered major upsets.
As usual, Bing sided with the home team most of the time, going 7-2 in these games. Bing is now 47-26 on the season when predicting the home team to win. The search engine was 2-2 when picking the away team, putting it at 20-12 on the season.
Bing typically performs better when the predicted chances are higher, but that wasn't entirely true this week. The search engine struggled in games with chances between 60-69.9% but did quite well in games with less than a 60% chance. Here's the full breakdown by predicted chance:
- 3-1 when predicted chance under 60% (21-19 on the season)
- 2-3 when predicted chance between 60 and 69.9% (25-15 on the season)
- 4-0 when predicted chance between 70 and 79.9% (19-3 on the season)
- 1-0 when predicted chance over 80% (2-1 on the season)
The bottom line here: when Bing predicts a team to win with a chance over 70%, that team almost always wins.
Bing's Playoff Picture
Bing's playoff picture remains unchanged in the immediate Week 7 aftermath:
Something has to change in the AFC soon, but it's unclear what that will be. The top three teams are undefeated, and the 4th-8th teams all lost this week. The 1-6 Ravens are almost certainly not in the hunt anymore. And the 3-4 Bills can't be considered a playoff favorite either. The 3-4 Colts are sitting at the top of their division, so they're probably safe for now. The 4-2 Jets are the only other team with a winning record, so they should be making an appearance in this picture pretty soon.
Bing's NFC playoff picture will likely remain the same at least through another week. The Packers and Panthers are still undefeated, and the other 4 Bing playoff teams won in Week 7. Even though the Seahawks are 3-4 now, it's hard to say they aren't at least in the hunt. The 3-4 Eagles, on the other hand, look like they are trying to get out of the playoff picture. Maybe it's time for Bing to put the Rams on this list.
Bing Predicts NFL Week 8 Preview
So what's going to happen in Week 8? Here's what Bing has to say:
The key matchup this week is definitely the Packers vs the Broncos. The two undefeated teams kick off Sunday night in Denver, which is probably why Bing is giving the slight edge to the Broncos. Surely Bing would favor the Packers if this game were being played in Green Bay.
Elsewhere around the league, Bing says the other three undefeated teams will all win again. Bing is most confident with the Patriots over the Dolphins (85%) and least confident with the visiting Bengals over the Steelers (52%). The Panthers also look pretty good with a 70% chance to beat the Colts.
Bing is siding with the home team in 10 of 14 games this week. The riskiest pick here might be the Seahawks over the Cowboys in Dallas, although neither team has looked very good this season.
Here's the weekly breakdown by predicted chance:
- 3 games with predicted chance under 60%
- 6 games with predicted chance between 60 and 69.9%
- 4 games with predicted chance between 70 and 79.9%
- 1 game with predicted chance over 80%
That looks almost identical to last week's breakdown when I predicted Bing would go 10-4 (which they did). Based on the stats, I'm predicting another 10-4 week for Bing.
