New Twitter Ads

If you didn’t know, there has been an ongoing discussion about advertising on Twitter. Promoted tweets, which can only be found when you search for a topic, have been implemented since early 2010, but Twitter is now planning on taking those promoted tweets and placing them at the top of your timeline.

The Twitter blog explained how the new Promoted Tweets would work:

“Tweets from the organizations you follow reach you directly, by placing them at or near the top of your timeline. These Promoted Tweets will scroll through the timeline like any other Tweet, and like regular Tweets, they will appear in your timeline just once.”

My initial reaction to hearing about Twitter’s new advertising strategy was — bad idea. After reading their explanation, I have warmed to their plan because quickly receiving deals at the top of my timeline will be a nice addition; however, that is the only thing that excites me.

I am not excited about the Promoted Tweets potentially creating a cold, lifeless, experience with my favorite brands because they want to receive conversions rather than communicating with their fans about bettering their company. I also don’t want to see Twitter overrun with promoted everything. The whole point of Twitter is to genuinely share and interact with people and brands — not be sold to.

Since Twitter has already started rolling their new Promoted Tweets out I believe some people will be adverse to it, including myself, but that will not stop Twitter from growing just as Facebook and other social networks have.
